 Intelligence and surveillance

Our approach to intelligence and surveillance

These course- and training options give participants an insight into the work of intelligence and security services. We offer a range of valuable skills that can be used in a variety of contexts.

Surveillance

Surveillance is the art of following and observing people without being noticed by the target. Depending on your profession and role, you can be both the target and the observer. Our 2-day surveillance detection training program is designed to help participants develop the skills they need to detect if they are being followed, also known as counter-surveillance. There are a variety of reasons why someone might be targeted for surveillance, ranging from governmental agencies seeking information on their whereabouts and associates to criminal organizations gathering intelligence before conducting an attack. During the program, we will focus on developing a Surveillance Detection Route (SDR) and practising this technique on the streets. The aim is to help participants become more aware of their surroundings, recognise suspicious behaviour, and respond effectively to potential threats. Our basic surveillance course spans 3 days and is specifically tailored to individuals who will be carrying out surveillance and gathering intelligence in major cities. This course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct effective surveillance, particularly in situations where the target is likely to use public transport networks and travel on foot instead of by car. We will focus on the following topics: Covert Awareness: Understanding how to maintain a low profile and avoid drawing attention to oneself is essential when carrying out covert operations. Covert Communications: Communicating effectively without arousing suspicion is a key skill for anyone involved in covert operations. Our training covers a range of communication techniques and strategies to help participants stay under the radar. Public Space Surveillance: Conducting surveillance in public spaces, such as parks, streets, and squares, presents unique challenges. Our training program explores these challenges and provides participants with the tools and techniques they need to gather intelligence effectively. Public Transport: When the target of surveillance is using public transport, it's important to know how to blend in and remain inconspicuous. Our training covers a range of strategies for conducting surveillance on buses, trains, taxis, and the tube. Indoor Malls, Stores and Restaurants: Conducting surveillance in indoor spaces, such as malls and stores, can be challenging due to the multiple levels and complex layouts. Our training program provides participants with the skills they need to navigate these spaces and gather intelligence effectively. Our 5-day surveillance course is a combination of the above mentioned courses: we combine the 2-day surveillance detection training with the 3-day basic surveillance course.

Social engineering

Social engineering and engagement is a mode of communication used by HUMINT (Human Intelligence) experts. They are trained to obtain valuable information from human sources. In most cases, these sources are unaware of the true nature of the HUMINT operator. The psychological aspect, the way in which the source is approached, is crucial for success. During this course, we focus on different communication related subtopics, such as: Interpersonal skills: effective communication is the cornerstone of any successful interaction. Our courses focus on helping individuals build rapport and develop persuasion techniques that can be used in a range of settings. Motives and motivation: understanding why people are willing to share information, even if they are not allowed, is an important skill for anyone looking to gather information. Our courses explore the various motivations that may lead someone to divulge information and how to leverage this knowledge to your advantage. Methods of meeting: conducting clandestine meetings can be a tricky business. Our courses cover a range of techniques for ensuring that meetings remain confidential and discreet, from choosing the right location to communicating effectively without raising suspicion. Elicitation: our courses explore a range of methods for obtaining information clandestinely during normal conversations. From asking leading questions to using body language to elicit responses, our courses provide individuals with the skills they need to gather information discreetly and effectively. We offer a 2-day course where we start in the classroom with the theoretical basics. Afterwards, we go outside to practice in the real world. Communication is something you learn by doing it and practising, not by PowerPoint. That's why we also offer a 3-day course where we conduct more scenario training.

About the Mavens Academy

We believe in accelerated learning, meaning we have a compressed curriculum, individual- and group-paced instruction, a practically oriented program and continuous debriefs. We also use Virtual Reality (VR) technology in some of our modules.

All our training and courses take place in a safe learning environment; by creating conditions under which people are encouraged to show themselves and their vulnerabilities, and under which they are not afraid to try and fail. We consider failure to be a success in progress.

We only use experienced, highly skilled professional instructors in our academy, and we always ensure an efficient, fun and safe learning environment.

In our realistic training and scenarios all our instructor role-players have in-depth knowledge about the particular topic and will balance role play with instructions (in role) to maximise desired outcome and learning.
